DESCRIPTION:Basic Confidence Course with Sussex \nA county-wide course designed to help beekeepers feel confident\, capable\, and calm with the core skills of beekeeping.\nThe programme covers the full BBKA Basic syllabus\, with integrated honeybee health throughout\, and also supports those\nconsidering the Honey Bee Health Certificate.\nFormat\n• 6 online (Zoom) evening sessions\n• Approximately 2 hours per session\n• Delivered by experienced trainers from across Sussex\nThis course stands alone as a confidence-building programme. Taking an assessment is optional.\nSession 1 – Swarming\, Varroa and Keeping Colonies Viable\nThursday 16 April 2026\nTrainer: Malcolm Wilkie\nThis session tackles two of the most important factors affecting colony survival and beekeeper confidence.\nWe will cover:\n• Why honeybee colonies swarm and how to recognise the signs\n• A clear\, straightforward method of swarm control\n• Taking and hiving a swarm\n• Detecting and monitoring varroa\n• Effects of varroa and associated viruses on colonies\n• Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approaches\n• Re-infestation\, mite resistance and Parasitic Mite Syndrome
